1980年2月,中巴購入30部Dennis Jubilant 巴士投入服務,編號DS1-DS30,主要服務柴灣區。30部DS中,除DS14於1993年在東區走廊著火並燒毀全車(相關文章)外,全數於1998年轉售予新巴,至1999年中全數退役。
DS1原被保留作為新巴建議設立的「巴士博物館」其中一部展品,在等待政府回覆期間與其餘數部保留巴士停放於城巴鴨脷洲廠及黃竹坑廠頂。(下圖:Ching攝)
數年後,該計劃取消,新巴將之售予香港巴士迷會作收藏,現時是全球唯一一部仍然存在的Dennis Jubilant巴士。 下圖剪報中的阿豪正是著名巴士書藉作者龔嘉豪先生,此車的日常管理工作均由他代為處理。

購退役巴士 狂迷有個夢
擁有一架巴士是眾多巴士迷夢 寐以求的心願,不少瘋狂巴士迷索性買下退役巴士大翻新,更專誠投考巴士牌親自駕駛巴士在公路上馳騁,與志同道合的友人一起「遊巴士河」,尋回昔日坐舊巴士的回憶。這群巴士迷都有同一希望,就是將翻新好的退役巴士,在旅遊景點作穿梭巴士之用,讓旅客體驗本港舊有巴士風味,「退役巴士都有價值,唔係淨係齋擺或當係廢鐵般看待!」
每月開支三千元
巴士迷阿豪競投了一部在九八年退役的丹利士喜悅型號中巴,是本港近百架同型號中,唯一「劏剩」的。他表示,該巴士令他尋回中學時代追女仔的回憶,因當時每日都乘搭17號巴士往觀塘上學,並暗戀同乘該路線的女同學,於是展開追求但結果失敗。
另一巴士迷阿軒則與友人共同擁有一部於一九八五年出廠的利蘭奧林匹克型號的退役九巴。他指間中會與友人駕駛此退役巴士到鬧市,如去年除夕夜,便駛至中環碼頭觀賞煙花,亦曾駛往海洋公園留影,「試過在行車途中,有人伸手截車!」
他指出,每月「經營」這部退役巴士約二千至三千元,盡量將它翻新成原本面貌,保存歷史價值。對於英國及澳洲都有將翻新好的退役巴士,用作接載旅客前往當地博物館之用,他慨嘆本港仍未推行類似服務而感到可惜。
另外,一部專利巴士的「壽命」是十七年,九巴每年平均約有百部巴士退役,去年僅約卅部。九巴會在每部巴士退役前,回收性能良好的零件或主件,交翻修廠循環再用。九巴主件翻修廠助理工程師梁國雄稱,每部退役巴士可供拆卸回收再用的零件逾五十件,包括引擎、波箱、尾牙等。

香港巴士迷會於數年前購入前中巴/新巴退役巴士DS1後,一直未有安排修復事宜,直至2012年終於有突破性發展。巴士迷會透過城巴小濠灣廠的協助下,將DS1翻髹上新的油漆,讓它可以用全新面貌出席於2月26日舉行的第廿二屆巴士大集會。
當日我也有份出席,在看到全新模樣的DS1時,實在感到興奮,但轉眼便發覺車身上那中巴獨特的藍色好像不是很正確,比中巴時代深色了些,而上層的奶白色則較白了一點。在下午拉車出來拍照的時段,一位幹事透過咪高峰向參加者談及這次翻油工程所遇到問題及解決方法,以下是我憑記憶寫出來,可能遺漏了一些部份,希望各位不要介意。
巴士迷會安排DS1於2012年2月19日(即大集會個多星期前)駛往城巴小濠灣廠進行翻髹油漆工程。可能你會問為何是城巴而非其他車房或工場? 是否因為部份巴士迷會的幹事是城巴的管理層成員,利用其權利來免費完成此工程? 不要誤會,巴士迷會有為這次工程付出合理費用予城巴,金額為數萬元,包括將車身上原來的油漆去掉,然後重新髹上新油漆,但機械部份並不包括在內,故此DS1與往年一樣,仍然非常大煙。
由於新巴於1998年收購了中巴大批巴士,故此其油房曾購入及儲存中巴獨特的藍色油漆以便於維修或驗車後使用。事隔十多年,在新巴油房只能找到一罐已乾涸了的中巴藍色油漆,巴士迷會唯有記下顏色編號及向當時中巴的油漆供應商ICI訂購新貨。可惜,由於中巴使用的是手掃用磁漆(特性: 具有良好的光澤、耐候性、耐水性,附著力強,能承受氣候的強烈變化),而現時ICI已沒有出產此顏色的磁漆,故此唯有改用符合揮發性有機化合物 (VOC) 條例的噴漆。但ICI並沒有這種藍色的噴漆,小濠灣油房的師傅唯有委托該公司代為「溝」出這種藍色,並根據一部中巴模型車作為樣辦,所以前陣子有關DS1的藍色是參考自模型車的傳聞是真的。出來的效果較原來中巴時代的深色,也可以說是盡力後意料之內的偏差。
至於上層的奶白色,由於新巴連一罐存貨也沒有,不能確定所用的顏色編號,唯有與藍色一樣要求ICI「溝」出來(個人估計也是按照那部模型吧),結果較中巴時代的淺色。
根據朋友提供的資料,現時ICI仍提供的磁漆,包括有常用於家居裝修的多樂士Dulux,及汽車專用的Autocolor,而後者就是以往中巴一直使用的款式,可惜現時Autocolor只有數隻顏色提供,全數只適合九巴使用(例如九巴紅及米黃)。
下圖:在起清舊油漆後及重新噴上新油漆後,車身變得非常平滑,坦白說甚至感到有點陌生,與中巴時代使用手掃漆的效果截然不同。至於「DS1」三個字看起來頗為古怪,D字有接駁口之餘,兩個英文字的彎位都不平滑,原來並沒有使用字模。
朋友曾向我提及其實中巴有兩款字模,一款屬粗字,普遍套用在八九十年代的新巴士上,例如DL、DM、LA等; 另一款屬幼字,普遍套用在八十年代前的新車,例如PD、LF、SF等。巴士在年驗及重新翻髹後,中巴會於適當位置放上車隊編號的空心字模,並在其上髹上白色油漆,令其有印出的效果,字體既整齊且節省時間。那為什麼巴士迷會沒有使用字模呢?
幹事在講述DS1噴油過程時,提及由於時間緊迫,在兼顧將車身重新噴油的事宜後,沒有時間再為其他瑣碎事安排,包括中巴所用的字模。雖然某些巴士迷亦擁有這套字模,但為了避免因太過趕急而將借來的字模弄破,最後決定由油房師傅在下層樓梯位置套回DS1字體(因原來在車身的舊編號已被新油漆覆蓋),然後再在車頭、車身兩旁及車尾髹上DS1字樣。由於始終並非使用原裝字模,出來的效果頗為古怪,但相信油房師傅已盡了最大努力,遠看的話不算十分明顯。
另外,車門旁邊的「上」及「落」字,在清除舊油漆時亦被一併除去,最後油房師傅唯有靠相片自行截剪出類似的字型及大小,然後黏貼上去。
下圖:翻噴的工作就連車軨也照顧到,看起來煥然一新。
下圖:整部車雖然有些地方與中巴時代不盡相同,但已是近年來在香港的中巴退役車中效果較好的一部,唯獨車內的潔淨情況有點差,負責人告知是由於此車於大集會前一日才完成噴油工程,沒有時間處理車內的事了。

下圖: 題外話 – 在回看當日拍攝的相片時,看到李日新先生及黎守謙先生這張合照,令我突然想起一張來自近40年前一份剪報的相片。左圖轉載自1973年的星報,左一是當年在中巴工作的黎先生,中間的是擔任中巴交通經理的李先生,右邊的是顏成坤其中一位兒子顏傑強先生。兩人多年來一直於香港交通業界工作,尤其是阿爺(城巴員工給李先生的暱稱)創辦的城巴,在八九十年代不斷購入新車及大幅提升香港巴士的服務質素。另外,雖然兩張相背後的都是兩軸及新購入的巴士,但款式及功能已完全不能相提並論,這三十多年來科技進步為香港巴士業帶來翻天覆地的變化,實在令人驚嘆。
總括而言,對DS1能以全新面貌與大家見面,我也感到很高興,亦感謝巴士迷會幹事們的安排–畢竟這只是興趣,花費他們私人時間,能做到這個效果已經很不錯,希望未來能繼續翻新車廂及另一部已購入的中巴–SF3,讓已息微的中巴藍繼續閃亮下去。

玩物壯志 $20萬養巴士
今年,九巴成立八十周年,歷史博物館舉辦展覽,展出九巴歷年珍藏,會場外特別展出兩架古董巴士,讓市民緬懷一番。
現實中,原來亦有巴士迷不惜工本,收藏古董巴士,單是每年維修花費已經用上廿萬,對巴士的熱愛程度,無人能及。

廿三年前成立香港首個巴士迷組織,目前已有三百個會員,每年均舉辦大型活動,帶會員到世界各地參觀巴士。陳自瑜更是《香港巴士手冊》、《香港巴士年鑑》等書籍的作者,大力推廣本地巴士。
香港巴士迷會目前儲的是 1980年英國 Dennis車廠的 DS1,陳自瑜話全球只此一架,「 DS1是應中巴要求做的,因為港島區山路多,巴士設計要有良好的爬山能力,於是 Dennis車廠特別為中巴訂造三十架,其餘廿九架已全數銷毀,得這架保存下來。」
火燒巴士
兩星期前,元朗八鄉橫台山劏車場一場大火,差點令這篇訪問做不成!事關香港巴士迷會收藏的一架古董中巴,就泊在旁邊的劏車場,大火剛好燒到巴士前被救熄,現場仍然見到地上遺留燒過的痕跡,黎守謙大呼好險,但同類事件並非第一次發生,「廿年前我們儲過一架古董九巴,結果劏車場大火,一把火燒清光,今次算好好彩。」正正道出儲古董巴士背後的風險。
黎守謙話經費有限,巴士座椅已生銹及塵封,亦未有預算修葺,「世界各地政府均設立博物館保育舊交通工具,少有由私人組織做,亦曾經聯同香港老爺車會去信特區政府提出相關要求,可惜不被接納。」
當年巴士仍採用前置引擎,引擎設在司機位旁邊,今時今日全數巴士已改用後置引擎。
巴士上大部分零件依然可以運作,包括圖中所見的路線號碼牌。
保養昂貴
未計大火、水浸等意外,儲得巴士,就有好多事情要考慮,「首先要揀地方,基本上要在香港收藏一架巴士,除非有私家地,否則多數要租劏車場擺放,一定要揀保安程度較高,嚴禁閒雜人出入的,先保護到巴士免被破壞。另外仲有好多保養細節,例如每隔一、兩年要為外殼髹上新油,如果想架車行得走得,更要另聘整車師傅維修,換過電池及零件,條數好襟計!」
因涉及會務,黎守謙拒絕透露保養費用,不過有曾儲過古董巴士的本地巴士迷透露,「買巴士不難,事關巴士公司車廠地方有限,定期會將舊巴士交到指定劏車場,五萬蚊左右就買到一架,但買車容易養車難,劏車場場租及維修費都好重皮,每年少不免要使十至廿萬。以前試過儲架古董九巴,但後來應付不來,結果還是賣回俾劏車場。」
一年揸一次

儲得舊巴士,當然想一嘗揸巴士的滋味,陳自瑜話要留意兩點,「首先一定要有巴士駕駛執照,同埋每架退役巴士會有個車主(多數是接管巴士的劏車場場主),要掛有屬於該車主登記的 T牌(試車牌)方可駛出路面。」
限制多,每年古董中巴亦只出巡一次,「要預時間撻車,又要先通知車主預留 T牌給我們使用,還要搵人來揸,幾大工程,於是每年年初會員大會先會將巴士揸出去,俾會員拍照,其餘時間只可以泊在劏車場。」

I have not taken DS a lot as I did not live in the eastern district. When I got older and went for joy rides on DSs occasionally, my first thought was, those poor DS drivers…. they had to sit so close to the hot engine. LVs instead were much nicer to drivers, as the drivers seat and steering wheel were much higher, so the drivers got to step on the engine compartment instead of getting their legs scorched by it. This is why DS / N / Hark-gum-gong / Big-bumpers were also nicknamed “Siu-gerg-mo” (burning leg hair). I have fond memories of LVs, their energy and their Gardner 6LXB roar. They were the kings of Pokfulam Road, on which LV drivers greeted each other by making “Tsip Tsip” sounds with hand brakes. That might have been dangerous if they were not careful with the hand brakes, but I didnt know it was dangerous back when i was a kid.
To add to my comments in March, LF 204 (Toys Rus), 227, 229 (Chi Fu shopping centre) were also regulars in the early 1990s. LF204 had a semi-automatic gearbox, which made for a choppy ride. Another LF with a semi was LF242. It was not a 38 regular though. |

Im quite certain XF did not have Wah Fu. XFs were managed by Chai and North Point depots and did not cover Wah Fu routes. XF did have 38 and Chi Fu however on all displays. Rt 42 was started in the mid 80s with big 12m 3-axle buses from early on, so it didnt use XF as scheduled buses. Anyone with a destination scroll from an XF can testify. Rt. 42 was indeed the envy of other South district routes in the 1980s since there were not many 3-axle buses on non harbour crossing routes in those days. DMs were scheduled on 38 towards the end of CMBs franchise. LM might have appeared a few times on 38, but I think they were helping out from other routes only, most probably from 82 which needs to climb Chai-steep. LM should be perfect for that. Back in the early 90s, after the morning rush hours, no one else would use the innermost bay besides 38. Now things are more orderly. I really like 95C for its frequent service. Feel great to ride on a 15xx MAN. |

I guess XF should have got “Wah Fu” destination display because many CMB routes terminate there. Probably the CMB drivers were lazy to change the display or did not know this display, so they just wrote on a card. Also I believe XF should have run on rt.73 due to bus deployment change in Stanley, although I had never seen. Would someone please confirm? About the parking of DL and ML on rt. 38/38A in Chi Fu Fa Yuen, most CMB drivers used to park their buses in the innermost bay, which is now rt. 95C/37X buses are using, even the buses were LF. They drove in very smoothly, so it was rather quick to let passengers get off buses in Chi Fu Terminus. It is totally different now where NWFB and Citybus have to squeeze in those designated bays which sometimes less-skilled drivers need to reverse back and go forth to get in the bays. That annoyingly takes a few minutes waiting for getting off. I doubt the LM on rt.38 were also from rt.82 (I witnessed LM3 on rt.38 in original livery parked in Chi Fu terminus) |

DS其實行既線真係唔算多,可能量少吧,所以盡可能都係歸一間廠管哂,所以差唔多清一色都係8號同82號既正字軌。
不過講行車感受,似乎祖比倫係比勝利二型「DUN」好多,但同九記鴨比,似乎DS再要「DUN」一D,直至九十年代,九記鴨加裝軟墊隔音,但DS好似係裝另一種款既隔音(其實真係唔太確定到底有無裝過),總之坐導航位果陣,DS唔單止震過九記鴨,行車聲浪仲係好似80年代既九記鴨一樣,吵到耳嗚。 駕駛室標板都係,中記似乎無乜改動過,有D甚至連指揮燈桿都改用珍寶果隻扭掣,但九記鴨就統一將之從左面轉右面。 |

LF58 was a regular on Rt 38 in the 80s. It was one of the very few Metsec Bos that belonged to the Wong-depot. Around 1991-1993, LF33 became a regular but it belonged to the NorthPoint/Chai-depot. It was on Rt 38 due to its ad.
Rt 38 had a few rebodied Bos in the 80s, including LF5 and 31, and probably also 21, 25, 26 and 30. Rt 38/38A regulars in the 90s included LF33, 143, 171, 213, 255, 256, 257, 258?, 259 (upper deck rear destroyed by fire and partly rebuilt), 262, 266 (destroyed by fire in North Point) & 271 (which had a very misty front route number display). So many years…… I still remember so many round- and jim-headed bos. |

Back in the 80s, around noon, Route 40 would have a substitute vehicle from Wanchai Ferry doing one round trip to Wah Fu and then back to Wanchai Ferry. The purpose was probably to let Rt 40 drivers have lunch. That substitute vehicle could be an XF from 11A or a DS from 8. I have taken a Wah Fu-bound DS once (probably DS26). I have seen XF72 from 11A do this Rt 40 round trip very regularly. Of course, like most XFs, which were Chaiwan-based, that XF did not have WahFu on its destination blind, so a handwritten WahFu was put on nearside windshield instead.
Such substitution also happened for Rt 38. In the 80, Rt 42 did not run after 8pm. But there was a WongChukHang-based Rt 42 bus that reached North Point shortly before 7-8pm which needed to return to WongChukHang. The arrangement was that that Rt. 42 would return to the Southern district on Rt. 38. I remember that that bus was either DL3 or DL4. After reaching Chi Fu, that DL would drop off all passengers at the roadside Rt. 40/970X bus stop, and then keep going uphill to leave ChiFu, much like how 95C does it today. It was very rare to have a 12m bus come to ChiFu in the 80s. Even today, it is still rare. The only other times I have seen a 12m CMB bus visit ChiFu were Rt 38 sometimes gave a few surprises because of occasional substitute vehicles from the Chaiwan depot. To name a few, I have seen MS, SD (with Caltex Ad) and DS (in the 80s) and MB+MC (in NWFB days). Ive even taken an S (Guy Arab V) on Rt 38, before Aberdeen Tunnel was completed. One more interesting fact, around 1986, there was an SD on Rt 48 every morning. I still have no idea how that SD got into Southern district. Perhaps, it was visiting the WongChukHang-depot doing some Yat-Sau (daytime maintenance) and helping out on Rt 48 during the morning rush hours. Compared with these interesting scenes with CMB, todays bus allocations look so boring. |

我反而比較關心既係內飾同機件配給方面的問題…
響英國,利蘭既零件通街都有,曾經眼見一個小郡既scrap yards,一地都係利蘭既波掣,唔值錢到有d去執既都得,但丹尼士就比較麻煩,近代既車款零件就當然多啦,但祖比倫算係得香港先有,買少見少,我有點擔心呢部車再耐一點既話,保養會越來越麻煩… |

其實是否當中有其他難處而沒有公佈就不得而知,很多事在做的時候才會發現當中的困難。
當然若果將安排翻噴的工序提早一點進行,令整件事有更多時間讓小濠灣廠噴油房的員工作測試的話,可能會更好。 |

外殼其實翻到九成已算好唔錯了。溝漆係一件好難,好難既事,可能有D朋友唔明白溝漆既過程,甚至以為用肉眼參考舊既顏色,就可以溝到一模一樣。當然,DL2係可以參考,但佢似乎係上身既米黃OK少少,藍色就都好似仲係有少少變淡,即使澳州既ML1隻色都唔可能百分百一樣。
講到尾,其實能夠盡量翻新至原車一樣當然完美,不過能夠盡力保留原車,都不失為好事來的,況且過多一兩年,外漆始終都會變番淡,或者到時隻色可能又會唔同。至於機件大煙,有可能係副偈曾經有一段好長既時間無郁過,加上成副吉偈又已經無做過大檢,所以油泵、齒輪軸、(應該話)成副偈都有油渣屎。拆佢出黎好好洗下應該可以盡量減低大煙既問題,話完全無就未必得,除非換咁D件啦,但據我所知,英國都幾難搵DS既件,始終佢唔係珍寶、都城之類,係得香港先有既車我唸都幾煩。 |

“教”色係差少少的 如果係油性油漆(開天拿水/節水噴果d) 隻色乾左係會深少少 所以我地通常會用”色種”噴一塊仔用黎做樣板 見到乾左隻色正唔正確 教好先會成部車噴不過我睇果班師傅都係整車多, 噴油唔夠專業仲有, 其實”DS1” “上” “落”哩幾隻字 唔一定要用手畫咁肉 可以去沖曬鋪印出黎”貼”上去……. |

The govt doesnt seem to like having heritage vehicles running on the street pumping out black fumes, unless they can be fitted with smoke reduction devices, which would inevitably impair the original mechanical configuration of the vehicles. But as a bus enthusiast, I would be very happy to see existing preserved buses be granted proper licenses to run on the streets.
LV36 is lucky enough to get preserved in Scotland. But after all, Leyland was more famous than Dennis back in the 80s, so I guess even if DS1 returns to England, it would not get much attention from local museums. ADL as a for-profit organization probably wont be willing to shell out any money to preserve it either. So the best place to keep DS1 would be HK. Maybe enthusiasts can contribute money to build a private bus museum in Hong Kong and fund its operation by charging admission fees? |
